Quicken 2010 is an excellent version of an old stand-by

I have been using Quicken since version 1 or 2 in the late eighties. It has always had some annoying peculiarities I admit, and it has occasionally frustrated me, but hey, so has my wife, and we have stayed happily married a lot longer than I have been using Quicken. I use Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax regularly. I have used Quicken on every MS OS since DOS 3, and on every platform since the 8086 days until my current home-built Core Duo with Win 7 64 bit. Inuit forces me to update much more often than I prefer, and I wish they would just allow me to pay an annual fee and use their automated update system to modify the software under the hood instead of forcing me to upgrade every three years in order to continue the online updates of my financial institutions.

Anyway, seeing several negative reviews of Quicken on Amazon was surprising to me, and I decided to chime in to give a little balance. Having used this product consistently for over 20 years, I can say without hesitation that is the most trouble free, least complicated piece of software I have ever used. It has quirks; downloading data from financial institutions is still a work in progress, but honestly, 99.44% of the time, the software and downloads work really well, and the 2010 version is improved over the 2008 version as far as the interface with the financial institutions. I upgraded because ver. 2010 is designed to work with Win 7 64 bit. I have over 200,000 transactions in my data file, and have never lost so much as a decimal point. Of course, I back up each time I make entries or download data as well. The program also makes regular backups in its program data file. There is NO way to lose Quicken data; there are too many redundant files for that to happen.
I cannot speak for Money users' woes when migrating to Quicken, but I imagine a little searching on Quicken and/or Money user forums or Google searches could provide some assistance for their issues. And, being a regular shopper at Amazon and having dealt with Intuit CS occasionally over the years, I am very suspect about not being able to come to some satisfactory resolution with either of the companies about refunds or credits if the claims are legitimate. Neither company is hard-nosed. (If you want to deal with a company that really doesn't care about their customers, try AT&T, but I digress.)

I see at least one individual has had trouble with his scheduled transactions working and unsuccessful in modifying those transactions. At a certain point, if the medium is unreliable, it would seem they would either change their method of doing business, or go online to the free Quicken forums and discover how others are coping with the same problems, with the same software, and same financial institutions. Or--like Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh--they can just sit on the nettle and complain about it hurting their bottom if that is their idea of fun.

Intuit is an American corporation that has managed to dodge the take-overs, competitors, and new concepts that have made so many other companies disappear. I give them credit for producing reliable, intuitive, straight forward financial software that simplifies home and small business accounting for those of us who need the help. And, no, I do not work for or even own stock in Intuit.
Loved it and the Download option

My computer recently crashed due to a lightning strike so I've been rebuilding. I thought it would be a great time to upgrade my quicken as I went to Windows 7 on my machines.

I was dreading having to order the package and wait the couple of days to get it in the mail because my significant other wanted this little project done in one day. I was very happy to find that this product was available for download and at a very competitive price.

THE DOWNLOAD:

I purchased this and then got an e-mail to download it right away. It was installed in 15 minutes. It's only about 60MB download and it came down really fast over broadband. If you're on dialup, Amazon has a little application that you download that can help you do downloads overnight and if you drop your connection, you can pick up where you left off. Still, if you use dialup, you might just want to order the software.

Overall, I was happy with the download

PRODUCT:
If you're a quicken user, this is just quicken. They did a facelift to it so that it looks somewhat like Office 2007, bigger buttons at the top.

I'll tell you what I liked right off the bat:
a) I was using Quicken 2005 and integration with my Bank was very very seamless with Quicken 2010
b) Since I lost my data from the lighting strike, I wasn't able to test recovery or upgrading files (I'm sure that's standard)
c) I liked that the default is a transaction is in one line (in 2005 transactions by default took too lines)

Overall, it's Quicken - it keeps track of my books and integrates nicely with my bank. I like it. I can't say I love it because I don't love balancing my checkbook and no matter what software was out there, it would still be a chore to do this job that needs to get done. I have to say, Quicken makes it about as easy as you possibly can.

Get it, use it, it runs on Vista and Windows 7. It's stable and reliable. Don't get hit by lighting like my pc or all bets are off.
Upgrade from 2009 Not Essential, but Enjoyable

The best price I could find for this newest version of Quicken was an Amazon download. I've been a Quicken users for years, and usually upgrade with every new release. I've read the negative reviews here, but for $37 I thought it was worth the money. True, there aren't a lot of major features in this year's release -- perhaps the biggest improvement is that backups are now just one file rather than multiple files. There are minor changes in cosmetics and functionality, all for the better. I enjoy seeing and experiencing what Intuit has done each year, even if it is only streamlining backups and giving a facelift to the menus. I have no problems with Quicken 2010 Deluxe, and have no regrets on spending $37.
Excellent tool for your finances

It had been a while since I had used Quicken before coming back to the fold. I had switched to Microsoft Money but had to find another product when my bank stopped using the Money format. They actually did me a favor. I was a bit skeptical about coming back to Quicken, but what a difference. My wife is a visual person so the color graphs are a huge help when talking about where we spend our money. I like the detail and flexibility it provides with setting up and tracking expenses. I've only scratched the surface of the extent to which the software can be utilized but I am suitably impressed. I have no reservations in recommending that you purchase this product.

After using Microsoft Money for over ten years I was disappointed and lost once that discontinued there product. I was very weary of what product I should try next. I have used Quicken now for about 6 weeks and actual wish I had been using this product all along. Took a few days to get the feel, but was overall very user friendly. Initial set up took about 4 hours, but seems to be the majority of the work. I can connect to financial companies that I had never been able to with Microsoft Money. I have recommended this product now to three family members that are also impressed.
