Incredibly Addicting Match Game with Flowers

I love Big Kahuna Reef by Reflexive, so when I saw Monarch: The Butterfly King in the store, I bought it in a heartbeat!
Also produced by Reflexive. this particular game is similar to Big Kahuna Reef, but instead of fish, we have flowers. Lots and lots of pretty flowers--at least ten colorful varieties.
Like the usual match 3 (or more) games (e.g. Jewel Quest, Bejeweled, etc.), you must match 3 or more of the same flowers to clear a tile.
The beginning levels are a simple tile...match 3 or more, and that's it...until the entire board is cleared.
In the higher levels, the tiles become locked, double locked, and so on...requiring successive matches to clear. When you match 5 or more in tandem (even if only in a 90 degree angle) bombs of various sizes are formed. You can then detonate the bomb by clicking on it for minimal effect OR, for more bang, make sure you switch it out with another tile.
In the upper levels, frogs are introduced. Like the black screaming monkeys in Jewel Quest (after you beat the game once), there are green frogs that, when matched, have the OPPOSITE effect of matching. That is, matching the frogs will RE-COVER tiles.
In my opinion, these are far less irritating than the fish skeletons of Big Kahuna Reef (for some reason).
If you have many successive matches, the Butterfly King increases his size. Get him over 100%, and you get three mini-bombs on the board. Get higher percentages, and you can even earn lives.
I love the ambience of the game: when matching flowers, petals cascade and there's a gentle whooshing noise. And when the bombs go off....man, is that fun! I love the levels that are basically bombfests!
If you run out of lives, no worries: you can begin the game right where you left off (but, of course, you start back at 0 points).
You earn butterflies by completing the various stages, but, unfortunately, there's no butterfly garden or any interaction with the butterflies. (With Big Kahuna Reef, you earn fish and can create a screen saver aquarium.)
I'm on Level 100 and having a blast! I needed to get some work done (I'm a writer) and there are times I can't pull myself away from this game! (My 10 year old, who also has Monarch on his computer, loves to watch me for some reason. He'll walk by and say "You're having recess again!"). *chuckle*
I can't remember having this much fun with a game!
If you like match 3 games, this one is superb. Colorful, engaging, and at least 5 different types of bombs...way cool!

I RAN ACROSS THIS, AND PLAYED THE TRIAL HOUR,,,,LOVED IT SO MUCH THAT I DOWNLOADED IT AND HAVE BEEN PLAYING IT SOLIDLY FOR DAYS AND DAYS ON END.
I LOVE THE FACT THAT AT THE END THERE IS A PROGRAM FOR YOU TO BE ABLE TO CONSTRUCT AND SHARE GRIDS, THAT WILL KEEP ME BUSY FOR QUITE A LONG TIME.
I RECCOMMEND THIS TO ALL PUZZLE MATCHERS OUT THERE!!!
NICE GRAPHICS, AND BOMBS, AND LOCKED PLACES, SOMETIMES TRICKY, VERY ENJOYABLE |
not your typical bejeweled type matching game

| I didn't think I would like this game after seeing the demo and realizing it followed the "bejeweled" concept like so many other games have in the last 10 years. But there are so many things about this one that gives it a different appeal. Aside from the beautiful graphics, soothing music, and great sound effects, Monarch presents a different style matching game. Yes, you move matching pieces around to remove a strand of three or more in a row, but they throw some pretty hefty challenges at you to keep you coming back for more. There are different grid patterns for each level, bombs that blow things up in a fantastic fireworks-like display, flower poppers that will save your life, aggravating frogs that will end it, and the overall goal of metal plates that have to be removed before you can advance to the next level. These are all additions Monarch applies to make this game very enticing and addicting. You will play for hours and your hand, or even your whole arm, will go numb if you're not careful. Consider yourself warned. ;) |
The download file contained a trojan virus

I can't speak to how fun this game was, because when I tried to install it my anti-virus software told me it contained a trojan. A disk scan confirmed that the setup file was contaminated.
I guess downloading games from Amazon isn't as safe as it seems.
